The Fantastical World of Wonders: Review on Blade Song

This book was so action-packed I’m still reeling a little bit.

When I first started the novel, I immediately knew this one was going to be interesting from the little definition at the beginning.

aneira [a-nir-a] derived from Antianeirai, found in the Illiad, warrior women, meaning ‘those who war like men’. Also known as Amazons.

That alone captured my attention. I recently read another book that had to do with Amazons, so it was interesting to have a different type of mythology in this novel. This book didn’t have so much to do with mythology as it did with just plain magic.

Kit is a very interesting character. She comes from a bad background, where there were many people she couldn’t trust, and she has a hard time trusting anyone. She’s kickass, willing to hurt those who get in the way of her job and those she cares about, but she also has a kind heart.

Then there’s the plot. It was fantastic. I gulped through the story, wanting to know more and also loving every second of it. Kit’s new job brings her all sorts of problems—from an obsessive vampire to a crazy-ass alpha-bitch (now I can’t read the words “My Lady” without cringing). It also brings a crazy hot and annoying “bodyguard” named Damon that drove Kit up the wall.

And then there was the romance. It wasn’t obvious. Not by far. It evolved so subtly that you only realized the romance and attraction was there when it was plain to see (and then when you looked back you wonder how you didn’t see it earlier). It emerged slowly, but it added a really great part to the book. It was also problematic for both parties, considering that they had people doing all they could not to bring them together.

I loved the magic. When Kit explained how she used it I was fascinated. There were several types of magic in this book and all of them were interesting.

I also loved Kit’s backstory. It added so much depth to her character and that really made her come alive to me. I loved being able to know what Kit had to go through to become the person that she is now—and trust me, that wasn’t pretty. Her past made her present self that much better and I loved the way that the author integrated that.

I can’t wait to read the next of the series, since the book left me hanging. There wasn’t a huge cliffhanger, but there were a few loose ends that I would like to see tied up!

I really want to say more but I don’t want to spoil anything for you, so you’ll just have to read it. If you love action, badassery, and subtle hate-turned-love romance, this is the book for you.
